SUMMARY:Lei Day
DESCRIPTION:In the state of Hawaii\, May Day is Lei Day. May 1st marks Hawaii’s nationally-recognized Lei Day — an annual tribute to a culturally iconic symbol. Celebrated by locals dressed in aloha attire\, the custom honors the state’s natural production of tropical flowers in the crafting and wearing of the lei. \nPassing and receiving of the lei is practiced in Polynesia. Original Hawaiian settlers continued this custom to the islands as a practice for all genders. In ancient Hawaiian times\, commoners and chiefs of all genders wore lei. Certain lei such as the lei niho palaoa\, made out of whale tooth and entwined human hair\, was reserved for royal blood. Today\, men and women wear and exchange flower lei on occasions like graduations\, funerals\, birthdays and weddings. \nLei Day began in 1927. Courtesy of Honolulu Star-Bulletin writer and poet\, Don Blanding\, the first Lei Day celebration was held on O’ahu and became a state-wide festivity two years later. \n

SUMMARY:Boys' Day
DESCRIPTION:In Japan\, where Boys’ Day originated\, the holiday was joined with Girls’ Day to form Children’s Day. However\, Hawaii set aside separate days for both sexes. Hence\, Girls’ Day is observed on March 3\, while Boys’ Day falls on May 5. \nA common sight in Hawaii’s neighborhoods during Boys’ Day is koinobori\, large carp streamers or windsocks that “swim” in the tradewinds on bamboo poles in front of homes. Following tradition\, each streamer represents a male in the household. The carp nearest the top of the pole usually symbolizes the father\, and is the largest. Additional carp represent sons ordered by age\, working downward from oldest to youngest. \nCarp are classic symbols of masculinity in Japanese culture\, associated with strength\, perseverance and longevity. In the wild\, the fish swim against the currents\, scale waterfalls and live an exceptionally long life—qualities that are fitting traits for a young man.

SUMMARY:Dave Koz with Special Guests Adam Hawley and Chris Walker
DESCRIPTION:In a career that spans more than three decades\, saxophonist Dave Koz has racked up an astoundingly impressive array of honors and achievements: nine GRAMMY® nominations\, nine No. 1 albums on Billboard’s Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart\, numerous world tours\, playing for multiple presidents\, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and more. A platinum selling artist\, Koz is also known as a humanitarian\, entrepreneur\, radio host\, instrumental music advocate and restaurateur. \nNow\, Dave Koz has released one of the most exciting recordings of his long career. Five years after recording their initial tribute to the great horn sections of soul\, jazz and pop\, Dave Koz and Friends’ Summer Horns II From A To Z reprises the all-star\, crowd-pleasing format of that smash hit outing. The album features Koz on soprano\, alto\, tenor and baritone saxes—along with alto saxophonist Gerald Albright\, tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot\, Rick Braun (trumpet) and Aubrey Logan (trombone and vocals)\, plus guest vocalists Jonathan Butler\, Kenny Lattimore and Sheléa—putting their own spin on classics by Stevie Wonder\, Paul Simon\, Michael Jackson\, Natalie Cole\, Earth\, Wind & Fire and more. Plus\, a guest spot from Gloria Estefan on an inspired recreation of her classic “Conga.” \nSummer Horns II From A To Z takes the original concept further by changing up the lineup and tossing in some unexpected surprises\, including a medley that miraculously blends a Duke Ellington swing classic with a more contemporary hit by hip-hop star Jay-Z. The album includes arrangements by Greg Adams (Tower of Power)\, Tom Scott (Michael Jackson\, Steely Dan) and Gordon Goodwin. “We looked at this as a completely new project because it was different personnel\,” says Koz. “We said\, if we want to do another version of Summer Horns\, we can absolutely change the concept and get a little more adventurous-the music deserves it.” \nSince the beginning of his career\, Dave Koz has been all about shaking things up\, dodging expectations and traditions. Summer Horns II From A To Z follows another milestone anniversary recording\, 2017’s Dave Koz and Friends 20th Anniversary Christmas\, which celebrated the saxophonist’s annual holiday tours and reunited him with pianist David Benoit\, Braun and acoustic guitarist Peter White. Also\, on hand were a cadre of talented vocalists and the Portugal-based West European Symphony Orchestra. \nThe Blue Note will be featuring two shows\, one beginning at 6:30pm\, followed by a night performance at 9:00pm. Doors open at 5:00pm and 8:30pm respectively.

DESCRIPTION:Pink Martini draws inspiration from music from all over the world\, crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop. Hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, Thomas Lauderdale founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education and parks. \nFeaturing a dozen musicians including vocalist China Forbes\, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe\, Asia\, Greece\, Turkey\, the Middle East\, Northern Africa\, Australia\, New Zealand\, South America and North America. SUMMARY:Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton
DESCRIPTION:Ms. Lisa Fischer is stepping into the spotlight at last. After four decades of singing background for icons like the Rolling Stones\, Tina Turner\, Chaka Khan\, and Nine Inch Nails\, Lisa is finally offering her own humble\, heartfelt song\, accompanied by her inventive new band Grand Baton. \nRaised in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn\, she emerged from New York’s studio scene in the early-1980s and quickly became session singer royalty. Lisa’s career revolved around supporting other artists\, including her mentor Luther Vandross and a constellation of music legends including Aretha Franklin\, Chaka Khan\, Bobby McFerrin\, Grover Washington\, Patti LaBelle\, and other major recording artists. Lisa joined the Rolling Stones on tour for the first time for their 1989 Steel Wheels tour; she has graced their stage for 26 years. \nThe breakout success of the Oscar-winning documentary Twenty Feet from Stardom (2013) altered the course of Lisa’s musical journey. Featuring clips of Lisa’s 1991 Grammy-winning R&B hit “How Can I Ease The Pain” and her legendary duet with Mick Jagger on “Gimme Shelter\,” and glowing testimonials from famous colleagues like Sting\, Patti Austin\, and Chris Botti\, the film showcased her virtuosity and vulnerability\, earned her a second Grammy award\, and left audiences eager to see and hear more. \nLisa set out on tour with no recordings or video to help book and promote shows\, headlining first in small clubs then at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals\, then at concert halls in major cities. In performance\, she draws from an eclectic palette of influences\, putting her stamp on Led Zeppelin and Little Willie John\, recasting rock anthems from her tours with the Stones and Tina Turner. Grand Baton’s organic fusion of African\, Middle Eastern\, and Caribbean rhythms\, psychedelic soul\, and progressive rock ignites Lisa’s flexibility and freedom of expression. Lisa’s range is legendary\, but her greatest gift is the ability to reach the hearts of her listeners. Ms. Lisa Fischer is on a creative journey\, destination unknown. \nThe Blue Note will be featuring two shows\, one beginning at 6:30pm\, followed by a night performance at 9:00pm. Doors open at 5:00pm and 8:30pm respectively.
